Matguard® for Athletes

You train all year, you do extra push-ups, you eat right, you go to clinics, tournaments, and combines to keep up with the competition...the last thing in the world you want is to be sidelined for the season or miss the states, or worse end up in the hospital due to a skin infection or virus.

As an athlete what you do to prevent yourself from getting a bacteria or virus is as important as weight lifting and cardio.

We designed our products with athletes in mind. Our BODY WIPES are full size (10 x 12in.) allowing for one wipe to clean your entire body, pads, gear and equipment. The wipe is discarded after use. The durable canister fits into any gym or athletic equipment bag and should last an athlete most of the season. Our BODY CLEANSE products are designed for the “on the go” athlete who are not able to get to a shower, but want to clean their skin of harmful bacteria. The convenient size fits into any purse, backpack, gym bag or locker. The three different scented flavors make them a favorite for both boys and girls. Our FOAM & LIQUID DISPENSERS are practical, economical and perfect for use in the locker room, workout room, or gymnasium to blunt the spread of germs and bacteria.

Work Out, Go Out... Stay Clean. When you can’t get to a shower Matguard® protects athletes from the nasty stuff!

Which athletes are most at-risk for skin infections?

Skin infections including MRSA have been reported mostly in high-physical-contact sports such as wrestling, football, and rugby. However, MRSA infections have been reported among athletes in other sports such as soccer, basketball, field hockey, volleyball, rowing, martial arts, fencing, and baseball.

Even though little physical contact occurs in some sports during participation, skin contact or activities that may lead to spread of MRSA skin infections may take place before or after participation such as in the locker room. Therefore, anyone participating in organized or recreational sports should be aware of the signs of possible skin infections and follow prevention measures.

How do I protect myself from getting MRSA and other skin infections?

Practice good personal hygiene.

At a minimum, hands should be cleaned before and after playing sports and activities such as using shared weight-training equipment, when caring for wounds including changing bandages, and after using the toilet.

  • Both plain and antimicrobial soap are effective for hand washing, but liquid soap is preferred over bar soap in these settings to limit sharing.
  • If hands are not visibly dirty and sinks are not available for hand washing, for example, while on the field of play or in the weight-room, alcohol-based body wiped or sanitizers can be used. Alcohol-based wipes or sanitizers with at least 70% alcohol content are preferred.
  • Shower immediately after exercise. Do not share bar soap and towels.
  • Wash your uniform and clothing after each use. Follow the clothing label's instructions for washing and drying. Drying clothes completely in a dryer is preferred.

MRSA

Staphylococcus aureus, often called "staph" is a type of bacteria commonly found on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. Approximately 30% of people have staph in their noses and do not have any symptoms. MRSA which stands for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus is staph that is resistant to commonly used antibiotics such as penicillin and currently available cephalosporin. In the past, MRSA was found only in healthcare facilities and caused infection in people who were sick. More recently, MRSA has emerged in the community and can cause infections in otherwise healthy people.

RINGWORM

Ringworm (also called serpigo) is an infection of the skin, characterized by a reddish to brownish raised or bumpy patch of skin that may be lighter in the center, giving the appearance of a “ring.” It can exist anywhere on the body. Depending on its location, it is also known as tinea pedis or "athlete's foot" when on the feet, tinea cruris or "jock itch" when on the groin area, tinea corporis when on the body, where it is most commonly referred to as ringworm, or tinea capitis when on the scalp.] Contrary to its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm but by parasitic fungi (Dermatophytosis).

HERPES

Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by Herpes simplex viruses; both herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) cause herpes simplex. Infection with the herpes virus is categorized into one of several distinct disorders based on the site of infection. Oral herpes, the visible symptoms of which are colloquially called cold sores, infects the face and mouth. Oral herpes is the most common form of infection. Infection of the genitals, commonly known as herpes, is the second most common form of herpes. Other disorders such as herpetic whitlow, herpes gladiatorum, ocular herpes (keratitis), cerebral herpes infection encephalitis, Mollaret's meningitis, neonatal herpes, and possibly Bell's palsy are all caused by herpes simplex viruses.

Why Matguard®?

  • Matguard® has enough alcohol to be effective.
  • Matguard® ensures the alcohol will remain in contact long enough to kill germs.
  • Matguard® is Skin Friendly
  • Matguard® is Easy to Use and Convenient

Matguard® has enough alcohol to be effective.

Experts agree that a percentage of 70% alcohol by weight is needed to effectively kill germs on the body and surfaces, the manufacturers of Matguard® hold a patent on products that range from 70% to 75% alcohol content by weight. This patented formulation is recognized by government agencies in the US and Canada as being effective in killing a broad range of germs and bacteria.

Matguard® ensures the alcohol will remain in contact long enough to kill germs.

Isopropyl alcohol is a very effective antiseptic for fighting germs and bacteria, although in order to be fully effective alcohol needs a certain period of time on the body or surface to properly kill all germs; alcohol used by itself on the body or on equipment surfaces will in many cases evaporate too quickly to effectively kill all germs. Matguard’s chemists developed a patented formula that slows the rate of evaporation, ensuring that the amount of alcohol we use in our products can kill 99.9% of the germs and bacteria present. The alcohol in our product kills the germs, than dissipates over time without leaving a sticky residue.

Matguard ® is Skin Friendly

The biggest problem with many products on the market is that they dry the skin causeing red, irritable, cracked and chaffed skin.

Patented Matguard ® formula has both an emollient and humectant designed to moisturize your body. It won’t dry your skin even when used many times each day.

Our products contain emollients which act to re-hydrate the skin by replenishing the moisture that is lost by washing, sanitizing, and exposure to chemicals and dry air. Our formulation also includes a humectant which is used to attract and draw moisture from the surrounding air helping to trap and bind it to the skin.
