Prevent Bacteria in Your Hockey Equipment

Prevent Bacteria in Your Hockey Equipment

Clean hockey equipment emits a unique, unpleasant smell, and that smell has even earned its own name - "rink stink!" In addition to burning your nostrils, rink stink can make you feel uneasy. This is caused by bacteria that build up on hockey equipment, such as blood, sweat, and dirt. Plus, it smells terrible and can spread infections. The only way to effectively deal with rink stink is to take preventable measures using Matguard products specifically designed for hockey equipment.

How to Prevent “Rink Stink”

Fighting rink stink begins with prevention. Here are some methods to prevent the stench from getting out of control on your hockey equipment:

1. Wear Full-Body Base Layers

Your hockey gear will remain protected from you if you wear compression or wicking pants, socks, and shirts. As well as absorbing sweat and dead skin particles, base layers minimize the formation of bacteria and the creation of offensive odors.

2. Always Dry Your Hockey Equipment

To prevent bacteria from growing and spreading, hang your hockey gear on a drying rack after practice. In moist conditions, bacteria thrive, so drying racks contribute to effectively drying gear and killing bacteria on it. If you want to ensure that no bacteria is left behind after using your equipment, be sure to hang your athletic bag too! When leaving your equipment to dry, be sure to spray it down with our Helmet & Pad Disinfectant Spray. This will keep your equipment from smelling in addition to disinfecting any germs that were in it after playing. In addition to spraying down your equipment, make sure you spray down your bag as well! Air drying your equipment and bag while spraying it down will prevent any bacteria from further spreading.

3. Air Out Your Skates

In comparison with other parts of your body, the soles of your feet have more sweat glands, which makes your skates more susceptible to odors. Every time you use your skates, remove your inserts, open the tongue, and let them air out. Once they're fully open, be sure to spray them down with Helmet & Pad Disinfectant spray. Not only will this stop funky smells in their track, but it will also prevent the blades from rusting. While airing out your skates, use Helmet & Pad wipes to ensure bacteria are killed and odors are being eliminated.
